Event description

Description

PLEASE NOTE: To ensure suitable physical distancing, this Heritage Walk will be limited to 15 people on each Walk. The Walk will be conducted twice and you may choose which date you wish to attend - Sunday 23 August or Sunday 13 September. See below for further information on safety in the COVID19 environment. Ticket sales commence on 23 July.

Woden might be only 50 years old as a town centre, however it has much more heritage than you might think. The middle of the Woden Town Centre has a number of heritage places, and these will be explored over the course of this walk.

Find out the history associated with Eddison Park, why it is so named, and why it is associated with so much military history. Explore the Woden Cemetery, its history, layout, buildings and features, and some notable people who are buried there. Notice some more recent heritage and other developments of the Woden Town Centre and recall some recent events.

The walk is approximately 3 km long on mainly flat terrain. It does include walking the undulations of the natural landscape around Eddison Park, the Woden Cemetery, Woden Town Park and return.

Meeting point: Underneath the large steel Eddison Park sign at the front of Eddison Park. The walk will take 1.5 to 2 hours to complete. Ample parking is available either in the Eddison Park car park off Launceston Street Phillip (opposite Canberra College), or in the carpark off Easty Street behind the Smith Family.

Walk Leader: Gary Watkins who is a local resident with an interest in the heritage of the area and the Secretary of the Council of the National Trust (ACT).

Bad weather: Unless otherwise advised by email, a walk leader will be at the meeting point where a decision will be made as to whether to proceed or postpone.

Note: For the comfort and safety of other walkers, we do not allow dogs on our walks.

COVID19 safety: Please check the current ACT health guidelines on protecting yourself and others before booking on this walk. Please note that you must cancel if you are unwell (a refund will be provided on request); you should maintain physical distancing of 1.5 metres from other people during the walk and observe good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs. If required, your contact details will be provided to health authorities. Hand sanitiser will be available before and during the Walk.
