Event description

Description

A Masterclass & Corrosion Laboratory Tour presented by SIRF Roundtables WA.

Kindly hosted by:

First in a series events which will allow us to dive deeper into particular corrosion issues.

Following strong interest in the overall field of Corrosion we are running a series of Common Interest Work Group meetings to allow people to deep dive into a particular area each time.

Rolf has kindly agreed to join us again and this time he is hosting the event at Curtin University and bringing with him Kod Pojtanabuntoeng who has particular expertise in the area of CUI.

Professor Rolf Gubner presenting:
Professor Rolf Gubner

Corrosion Specialist, Rolf Gubner - Professor at Curtin University and Corrosion expert. Corrosion is relentless and eats away at our assets degrading them over time. There are thankfully a number of techniques available to help extend the life of assets and our facilities. Want to learn from one of the best corrosion experts in Australia? Well, here's a great chance to do just that.

We are delighted to have Rolf Gubner - Professor of corrosion chemistry at Curtin University and Director of the West Australian corrosion protection research group presenting! Rolf will be presenting on identifications and classifications of corrosion.

Kod Pojtanabuntoeng:

Professor Rolf Gubner

We are also very pleased to have Kod join us for this meeting and she has particular expertise in the area of CUI. Kod is a Senior Lecturer at the Curtin University in the Science & Engineering Faculty. She is a member of the Australian Corrosion Association (ACA) and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE).

Kod's areas of expertise include:

  • Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI)

  • Internal corrosion of wet gas pipelines (top of the line corrosion, CO2 corrosion) and its mitigations.

  • Corrosion Modeling

  • Localized corosion of CRA's particularly at elevated temperatures

Join your peers as we talk about this important topic:

Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is caused by water entrapped within thermal insulation. The presence of insulation, and in particular jacketing, slows down water evaporation, prolongs wetting period and allows corrosion to proceed undetected. The hidden nature of the CUI challenges the industry when it comes to inspection and monitoring. Detection of CUI can be too late; hence, resulting in disastrous outcomes such as leakage, loss of containment, and even fire and explosion. A recent study has shown 10% of the maintenance and repair budget for a piping system and pressure vessels in the petrochemical industry is spent on CUI alone.

Agenda:

8:40 am - Arrive and check in
9:00 am - Prompt start with safety information and introductions
9:20 am - Group defines expectations for the day
9:30 am - Professor Rolf Gubner & Kod Pojtanabuntoeng presentation
10:30am - Open group discussion on real current CUI issues
12:00 - 12:30 pm - Lunch (provided) networking
12:30pm - Corrosion Laboratory tour
1:30pm - Group discussion on real current CUI issue
2:15 pm - Wrap up & event feedback
2:30 pm - Event ends

Who Should Attend?

SIRF Common Interest Work Groups are for anyone interested in the topic of the day, and have the broadest attendance range of any of our events. Chances are good that if you’ve read this far, this event is for you!

About SIRF Rt Common Interest Work Groups

All SIRF Rt events are designed to provide a safe environment for open discussion with peers on the topic of interest they are working on, in and around. SIRF Rt Common Interest Work Groups (CWIG’s) provide the best forum for peer-to-peer learning and best practice sharing. Participants are asked to bring something for ‘show and tell’ about the topic of the day as it applies at their organisation – it could be a full presentation, a few photos, a brief descriptions of their current efforts, a couple of charts or graphs – anything that will help improve the discussion or other participants’ understanding of your workplace. After each company shares the deeper discussion follows, guided by our practiced facilitators.
