Teaching Year 9 or Year 10 History? Looking for better ways to do it? Join us!

About this Event

Looking for research tasks that involve students using primary source materials in creative, collaborative, critical ways? Join the Virtual War Memorial Schools Program for 2019!

Who we are:

The Virtual War Memorial Schools Program is an exciting teaching opportunity involving a partnership between the Department for Education (SA) and Virtual War Memorial Australia. The partnership has been built around the use of the Virtual War Memorial for teaching and learning relating specifically to the Australian Curriculum: History in Years 9 and 10, and Civics and Citizenship at Year 10. The Program develops students’ research skills using primary sources.

Throughout 2019, we will be running professional learning activities that are aligned to the national curriculum and relevant to teachers of HASS/History, Research Project and Research Practices, English, Aboriginal Studies, Community Studies, Cross-Disciplinary Studies, Modern History, Society and Culture, and Women’s Studies.

The workshop:

In our fifth workshop for the year, Schools Program Manager Dr David Rafferty and a panel of experienced History teachers will show you how to teach the World War 1 and 2 Depth Studies using the Virtual War Memorial’s Schools Program. David will briefly show you how to research the involvement of Australians in the World Wars. Then Andrew Glasson (Charles Campbell College), Elspeth Grant (Golden Grove High) and Robert Love (Glenunga International High) will discuss the practicalities: what History teachers are trying to achieve, what students tend to do in practice, and how to address problems. You will come away with useful tips on turning curriculum goals into reality, all while engaging your students in an authentic research task.

The logistics:

This workshop is open to 25 teachers who would like to join the Virtual War Memorial Schools Program and work with their students to research the lives of Australian service personnel as part of their studies in HASS/History, or other subject areas.

The workshop will be held after school hours in Memorial Hall, at the Torrens Parade Ground. Free parking is available on site or on Victoria Drive; the boom gate to the Torrens Parade Ground will be raised.

Please bring a laptop, pen, paper and your creativity to the workshop.

*Prior to the workshop, please make yourself familiar with the Virtual War Memorial site. See www.vwma.org.au
