Event description

Description

A debate and expert panel workshop on two of today's hottest volunteering topics; keeping volunteers safe and youth volunteering.

Facilitated by Tasmania’s peak body for volunteering Volunteering Tasmania, in conjunction with the University of Tasmania's Institute for the Study of Social Change, this event is a must for anyone involved in volunteering.

The Expert Panel Workshop will feature representatives from front-line Volunteer Involving Organisations presenting confronting, real world examples and practical approaches to ensuring the physical, mental and social well-being of volunteers.

The Debate will be an intellectual, yet light-hearted argument focusing on the statement “Young people don’t like volunteering”.

Who will be there?

Our debaters include a range of experienced (and sometimes feisty!) Tasmanian volunteers, volunteering professionals and community members with unique insights and perspectives:

Affirmative - Peter West, CEO of the RSPCA, Chris Wisbey from ABC Radio and Anneliese Smith from the Migrant Resource Centre (South)

Negative - Emily Briffa from Hamlet Café, Tommy Windsor, Captain of the well-known Mobart Mo Bros (Movember Foundation) and Kate Cashman, passionate volunteer and academic

The Expert Panel includes Ian Fullagar, nationally renowned lawyer and current General Counsel for Surf Life Saving Australia (and a proud Tasmanian!), Michael Bruhn, the Sea Shepherd's Tasmania Coordinator and Lois Berry from the Hospice Care Association of North West Tasmania.

Why should I go?

This is an excellent opportunity for both volunteers and those working in organisations that involve volunteers to gain expert insight on the challenges facing volunteers and those who coordinate them.

Students from the University are encouraged to attend with those participating in the Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Program eligible to receive credit by attending.
