Course overview

This FREE interactive training session explores the fundamentals of modern volunteering in Australia, covering the rights and responsibilities (including WHS, Duty of Care and confidentiality) of this highly significant role.   

Effective communication strategies for working with a wide range of people, including older people, those living with a disability, and clients from CALD backgrounds will be discussed. Discover what ‘wellness’, 'reablement' and "enabling approaches" are and how to apply this in practice to your volunteer role. This free training is fundamental to volunnters working for programs funded by Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).

Topics covered

  • Developing awareness around personal values
  • Privacy and confidentiality issues when dealing with service users
  • Effective communication skills for empowering service users and encouraging independence
  • Assertiveness, boundaries and conflict management
  • Working with clients who are frail aged, have a disability and clients from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds

Who should participate?

This training is ideally suited to new Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) / Disability funded services' volunteers or as a refresher for longer terms volunteers.

 


 

  About the facilitator

Sin Mariani has a lengthy history working with communities and community organisations through her work in Local Government, Employment Services, Neighbourhood and Youth Centres as well as a consultant to the sector. She brings a diverse knowledge of the sector as a manager of a variety of services, and formerly as a direct service worker and trainer. With a passionate interest in all matters of communications, Sin also holds a strong belief and commitment to social enterprise as a way forward.

The Junction Neighbourhood Centre Inc.

 

The Junction Neighbourhood Centre Inc. (JNC) provides a diverse range of services and support to disadvantaged groups across local government areas in Bondi Junction (Waverley), Randwick and Maroubra. Operating for 41 years, JNC has continuously strived to provide responsive and meaningful services to meet identified community needs and seek to develop community participation in the development of these services.

As a basic introduction, The Junction Neighbourhood Centre Inc. is a not for profit organisation resourced through government funding from Department of Social Services, NSW Family and Community Services, local government, community grants, donation, and some sponsorship.

We provide specialist services for familiesolder people, people with disabilities and their carers; facilitate the recruitment, training and referral of volunteers for Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) in the City of Sydney and Eastern Suburbs; work with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in the Randwick LGA, run social inclusion groups & classes for people who are socially isolated; and organise practical assistance with outreach services including financial counselling, tax help etc.
