Course overview


This FREE interactive workshop explores the fundamentals of modern day volunteering in Australia.   


Effective communication strategies for working with a wide range of people, including older people will be discussed along with ‘wellness’ and 'reablement' approaches, which underpins the programs funded by Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).



Topics covered

  • Developing awareness around personal values.
  • Privacy and confidentiality issues when dealing with clients.
  • Effective communication skills for empowering clients and encouraging independence.
  • Assertiveness, boundaries and conflict management.
  • Meet a current practising volunteer and hear their journey. 


Who should participate?


Access to this training is given to staff and volunteers currently working in Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) funded services located in the local government areas of; The City of Sydney, Woollahra, Waverley, Randwick and Bayside.


This training is suited to new volunteers working in Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) funded services or as a refresher for longer term volunteers.



How do I get there? 


There are a number of different transport options for you to choose from depending upon your departure point.  


Light Rail:

  • The Inner West Light Rail departs from the top concourse at Central Railway Station and travels via Darling Harbour and Pyrmont.  Alight at the Glebe stop which is located 5 minutes’ walk (or 350 metres via the Palmerston Street Steps) to the St Helen's Community Centre on Glebe Point Road. You can also travel on this line to Glebe from Dulwich Hill via Leichardt and Annandale (and all stops between).


Bus routes: 

  • Bus 431 travels from Martin Place in the City via Central Railway Station at Railway Square and then onto Glebe Point Road. If travelling along the Eastern Suburbs train line as you can alight at Martin Place to connect with the bus, or from other lines at Central


  • Bus 433 travels from Martin Place in the City via Central Train Station at Railway Square and then onto Balmain, via Glebe Point Road. People who live in Balmain, Leichhardt and Annandale can also take the 433 to Glebe.


  • Bus 370 travels from Coogee Beach to Leichhardt via Kingsford, Alexandria, Newtown (along King Street) and then along Glebe Point Road and on to Leichhardt via Annandale. This bus does not go to Railway Square.


  • Bus 438 Abbotsford to the City and Martin Place and also Bus 413 Campsie to the City and Martin Place do not go down Glebe Point Road. People travelling from those directions (and on other bus routes that go along Parramatta Road) can get off on Parramatta Road at Glebe Point Road and change to a 431 / 433 / 370 bus to travel up Glebe Point Road. Alight at the Glebe Library stop just before Wigram Road (or walk 15 mins from Parramatta Road).



  • 2 hour on - street parking is available or use the all-day paid car parking located in the Broadway Shopping Centre. Carpark entrance is via Bay Street. The carpark is located 15 minutes’ walk from the St Helen's Community Centre

About the facilitator

Danni Meredith


Danni Meredith has enjoyed a variety of training and educational roles within the Vocational Education and Not for Profit sectors since 2004. Prior to this Danni worked as a Nurse Educator throughout the South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service.  Danni holds a Certificate IV in Training and Asssesment (TAE40110), a Masters in Education of Adult Education and is an accredited Mental Health First Aid and Older Person Mental Health First Aid Trainer.

The Volunteer & Service Training (VAST) Programme specialises in the delivery of Learning and Development opportunities for Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) funded services' for staff, managers, board members and volunteers across Eastern Sydney and the City of Sydney.

VAST provides face to face courses, managers' breakfasts, volunteer training, customised training opportunities, including our highly sought after, "Subsidised Training" program. 

VAST is part of the Southern Sydney Connection partnership with 3Bridges and STARS and is a programme of The Junction Neighbourhood Centre.
