VIVID 2017 - Money is NOT a Dirty Word
Sat. 17 June 2017, 9:30 am – 4:30 pm AEST
The starving artist is a pervasive idea, and in reality lots of creative people struggle in self-employment because money is a constant battle. This isn’t always just due to lack of funds, however – creative practitioners sometimes just need the basics of business money and financial literacy explained in a way that makes sense.
This one-day workshop helps creative freelancers and arts businesses practitioners to answer some of the biggest financial questions they might have:
- How do I weather the ups and downs of creative income?
- How do I make more money?
- Do I have to keep working for free?
- What should I charge?
- How do we manage our spending?
- What’s the deal with tax anyway?
- Where can I go for help?
Money is tailored specifically to creative people who are (or want to be) self-employed, and the activities are relevant no matter what your profession – filmmakers, writers, designers, visual artists, performers. Anyone can benefit from learning more about how to strategise to get what they want from creative business.
For more than a decade Monica Davidson has been helping creative people from all practices and professional stages figure out the basics of financial literacy, with the help of jokes, anecdotes and pictures. This surprisingly fun and informal workshop will leave participants feeling more confident about their financial situation, and provide an opportunity to ask all the questions they’ve always wanted to know. Watch Monica in action here.
All participants at the Money presentation receive a workbook stuffed full of extra resources and exercises in both printed and PDF form, a link to a bespoke website with links and notes, and a chance to network with other people just like them.
Who should enrol? Creative industries professionals and arts business people from start-up to established. Freelancers and soloists also welcome.
Who is Presenting? Business adviser and creative industries expert Monica Davidson from the Creative Plus Business Group. Monica is a writer and filmmaker by trade, who learned how to run a successful creative business the hard way and now shares that knowledge with others. In her workshops Monica discusses her own experiences, and shares examples from the 500-plus people she has mentored through the process of starting and building their creative businesses.
Are there ID requirements or an age limit to enter the event?
This event is open to all ages – but be warned, Monica is a fan of ‘colourful’ language!
What's the address again?
We are in DARLINGHURST, not Paddington! Between Crown and Riley streets, opposite the ANZ bank.
Can I park? Should I drive?
Street parking is very limited. What little is available is timed and costs roughly $4.50 per hour. There is a Wilson parking station nearby at 46 Riley Street which is more reasonable - the flat rate is $15 per day on weekends. It's about 10 minutes walk from our location.
What are my public transport options getting to the event?
BY TRAIN: The closest railway station is Museum, and the venue is a short walk up Oxford Street. BY BUS: All of the Oxford Street buses go past our building and will drop you at the nearest stop near the corner of Crown Street. The 440 and the M10 also come from Central.
Do you offer concessions?
Not for our Masterclass series. We think the price offering is already reasonable, but feel free to get in touch if you’re very strapped for cash and we’ll see what we can do.
Is my registration/ticket transferrable?
You can give your ticket to someone else to use, but there will be no refunds if you can't attend. Let us know in advance if you can’t attend and we’ll try and pop you in another masterclass.
Where can I contact the organiser with any questions?
Please email email@example.com or call the office on 02 8091 2082.
