Event description

Description

In 1914, Viv Garner was one of the first to enlist in the 14th Battalion—“Jacka’s Mob”. He was seriously wounded at Gallipoli and was killed in Belgium. He died with the hope that his younger brother, Les, might not suffer that fate.

Les was the father of the well-known St Kilda writer, Bill Garner, who performs this deeply-felt memorial. In offering an intimate reading of Viv’s short life, Bill is honouring a debt: if Viv had not sacrificed himself, Bill (who also carries the name Vivian) might never have been born. The link is direct. An intimate family connection shapes the story.

The tribute was first performed at St George’s, St Kilda, home church of the ‘Padre’ of the 14th, the Rev Andrew Gillison. Bill has also presented it at Talbot, Viv’s home town, and at the St Kilda Army & Navy Club. It is fitting that it now be performed at the St Kilda Town Hall, beneath the colours of the battalion.

Bill Garner is a playwright and an award-winning historian.
