About this event

SAFEMinds: In Practice Refresher is a half day (three hours) refresher session for SAFEMinds Champions who have completed the one-day SAFEMinds In Practice training.

This training session is ONLINE.

Please note, for ethical and clinical considerations, you are expected to be available and present for the entirety of the training. No part time attendance is offered.

SAFEMinds: In Practice Refresher participants will;

• Revise content of SAFEMinds Online including: introduction of SAFEMinds new website (safeminds.org.au)

• Refresher of responding to self harm in school communities using the SAFEMinds: NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach.

• Review the SAFEMinds: NIP it in the bud! Toolkit, local implementation and SAFEMinds: At Home resources

• Practise use of the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach and Toolkit resources through a new case study.

SAFEMinds: In Practice Refresher provides SAFEMinds Champions to engage and reflect on the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach and SAFEMinds Toolkit resources including the SAFEMinds Online materials and how to incorporate SAFEMinds into the school's existing professional learning and student wellbeing policies and initiatives.

SAFEMinds is a professional learning and resource package for schools and families that aims to:

 Enhance early intervention mental health support for children and young people in schools; specifically regarding mild mood disorders and self-harm.

 Increase engagement of parents and carers with schools to more effectively support their child’s mental health; and

 Develop clear and effective referral pathways between schools and community youth and mental health services.

Who can attend this training?

This training is restricted to Primary and Secondary school staff within the Victorian Government Department of Education and Training (DET) who have completed SAFEMinds In Practice (one-day) and want to re-engage and re-acquaint with the SAFEMinds package.

We suggest those who have completed SAFEMinds In Practice training between 6-24 months ago will benefit from attending the refresher. This allows participants have time to use the SAFEMinds package in their schools and return to share successes and challenges in implementing SAFEMinds for group discussion.

On the day:

Time: 3 hour session (open 15 minutes before start time)

For participants to fully engage in this training, each participant will need to log on with their own working microphone and camera. Please ensure you test your equipment before the training. Those who do not have a working camera or microphone will not be able to participate in the training.

Please log on 15 minutes prior to the training for technical support, training will commence at advertised start time. Please ensure you arrive before the start time as the room will be locked 5 minutes after advertised start time and entry will be refused due to clinical governance and emotional safety.

Due to the nature of this training, participants need to ensure that the space is private enough so as not to be overheard by others as conversations about self harm and suicide will occur.

Feel free to bring in coffee, tea and/or snacks to the training. Regular breaks will be provided during the training.

Prior to the day:

We will send you a training reminder, information on how to access the training via Zoom (no download will be required).

Spend some time reflecting on how you have used the SAFEMinds resources in your school/s so that you can share this with the group.

Need to cancel? Please email as soon as possible, please provide your full name, school, and date of training.
