SAFEMinds: In Practice Webinars equips school staff to become 'Champions' in the use of the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach.

About this event

SAFEMinds: In Practice is beginning to move back to face to face over 1 full day, due to COVID19 it was adapted to an online format. We will be offering both delivery modes please ensure you check this before registering.

This training session is FACE TO FACE.

Please note: if a suitable venue which abides by COVID19 Safe procedures is NOT located or if restriction are put into effect, this training will proceed (assuming minimum numbers are reached) though it will revert to ONLINE delivery. Participants will be notified if this change occurs.

COVID safe procedures will be adhered to as per Department of Education and Training policy, headspace policy and Department of Health. Social distancing of 1 person per 2 metres square is require and 1.5 metres distance. Participants are required to carry a mask at all times. SAFEMinds In Practice participants will;

• Develop an understanding of mental health in children and young people and how they are supported through SAFEMinds and the NIP in in the bud! early intervention approach.

• Develop an understanding of self harm in schools, children and young people and how to respond using the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach.

• Will be introduced to the NIP it in the bud! Toolkit, including the Safe and Healthy Bodies and Safe and Healthy Minds Brief Intervention Kits and explore the toolkit with a case study from SAFEMinds Online.

• Will be provided an opportunity to use the entire NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach and Toolkit resources through a new case study.

• Reflect on local implementation of the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach in your school community and develop an understanding of SAFEMinds: At Home resources for families.

SAFEMinds: In Practice equips school staff to become 'Champions' in the use of the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach and SAFEMinds Toolkit resources including the SAFEMinds Online materials and how to incorporate SAFEMinds into the school's existing professional learning and student wellbeing policies and initiatives.

For participants to get the most benefit out of this training, it is recommended the school send at least two staff.

SAFEMinds is a professional learning and resource package for schools and families that aims to:

 Enhance early intervention mental health support for children and young people in schools; specifically regarding mild mood disorders and self-harm.

 Increase engagement of parents and carers with schools to more effectively support their child’s mental health; and

 Develop clear and effective referral pathways between schools and community youth and mental health services.

Who can attend this training?

Return to face-to-face training

Please note that in line with COVIDSafe practices, headspace are trialling a return to face-to-face training sessions. The SAFEMinds In Practice session for this Region is currently scheduled to be delivered in-person. The Department of Education and Training has advised that due to current workplace guidelines only school employees will be able to attend this session. Area-based staff are advised to refer to current corporate guidance on the DET intranet if for more information.

This training is restricted to staff within the Victorian Government Department of Education and Training. SAFEMinds 'Champions' are drawn from school nominated staff with a responsibility for health, wellbeing and engagement and have capacity to influence implementation including:

 Mental Health Practitioners

 Principals/Assistant Principals

 Student Wellbeing Teams and Coordinators

 School Counsellors

 Teachers

 Year Level Coordinators

 School Nurses (may attend as school-based staff) (Online only)

 Student Support Services (may attend as school-based staff) (Online only)

On the day:

Time: 9.00am to 4.00pm (registrations will be open from 8.45am)

Breaks: BYO lunch (lunch is NOT provided). Regular breaks and a longer lunch break will be provided during the training. Due to COVID19 restrictions we are unable to offer tea and coffee. Please ensure you bring appropriate lunch, snacks and drinks.

What you need to bring: please ensure you bring your laptop for the day. A SAFEMinds in Practice toolkit will be provided on the day for your convenience.

Please ensure you arrive before the start time as access will be refused due to clicnical governance and emotional safety.

Prior to the day:

Please complete the SAFEMinds Online vignettes found under the schools tab of the SAFEMinds website (www.safeminds.org.au)
