SAFEMinds: In Practice is beginning to move back to onsite over 1 full day, due to COVID19 it was adapted to an online format. We will be offering online and onsite delivery modes please ensure you check the delivery modes before registering.
This training session is ONLINE.
When registering, you are expected to be available and present for the entirety of the training as if attending an onsite training. This training is interactive, with group discussions as well as individual and group activities, please ensure you are present and uninterrupted during the training to participate fully.
SAFEMinds: In Practice participants will;
• Develop an understanding of mental health in children and young people and how they are supported through SAFEMinds and the NIP in in the bud! early intervention approach.
• Develop an understanding of self harm in schools, children and young people and how to respond using the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach.
• Be introduced to the NIP it in the bud! Toolkit, including the Safe and Healthy Bodies and Safe and Healthy Minds Brief Intervention Kits and explore the toolkit with a case study from SAFEMinds Online.
• Have an opportunity to use the entire NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach and Toolkit resources through a new case study.
• Reflect on local implementation of the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach in your school community and develop an understanding of SAFEMinds: At Home resources for families.
SAFEMinds: In Practice equips school staff to become 'Champions' in the use of the NIP it in the bud! early intervention approach and SAFEMinds Toolkit resources including the SAFEMinds Online materials and how to incorporate SAFEMinds into the school's existing professional learning and student wellbeing policies and initiatives.
For participants to get the most benefit out of this training, it is recommended the school send at least two staff.
SAFEMinds is a professional learning and resource package for schools and families that aims to:
Enhance early intervention mental health support for children and young people in schools; specifically regarding mild mood disorders and self-harm.
Increase engagement of parents and carers with schools to more effectively support their child’s mental health; and
Develop clear and effective referral pathways between schools and community youth and mental health services.
Who can attend this training?
This training is restricted to staff within the Victorian Government Department of Education and Training. SAFEMinds 'Champions' are drawn from school nominated staff with a responsibility for health, wellbeing and engagement and have capacity to influence implementation including:
• Principal class staff
• Student Wellbeing Teams and Coordinators
• Teacher / Visiting Teacher/ Education Support staff
• Leading Teacher/ Year Level Coordinator
• School Nurses (may attend as school-based staff)
• Student Support Services (may attend as school-based staff)
• School Counsellors
• Mental Health Practitioners
On the day:
For participants to fully engage in this training a working microphone and camera are essential. Please ensure you test your equipment before the training. Those who do not have a working camera or microphone will not be able to participate in the training.
Please log on 15 minutes prior to the training for technical support, training will commence at advertised start time.
Please ensure you arrive before the start time as the room will be locked after 5 minutes advertised start time.
Due to the nature of this training, participants need to ensure that the space is private enough so as not to be overheard by others as conversations about self harm and suicide may occur.
Feel free to bring in coffee, tea and/or snacks to the training. Short breaks and a longer lunch break will be provided during the training.
Prior to the day:
Please complete the SAFEMinds Online vignettes found under the schools tab of the SAFEMinds website (www.safeminds.org.au)
We will send you a training reminder, information on how to access the training (no download will be required) and resources for the training closer to the date. Please ensure you access these prior to the training.
