Event description

Description

Unsure how to navigate dense budget papers?
Want some help finding your thing in the budget tables?
Unsure of the difference between recurrent, capital and offset expenditure?
And what is TEI anyway?

We're here to help!

This session will provide an overview of the state budget process, explain what each of the budget papers are, and how to find key information in them. It will draw attention to the broader economic and political context, offer "ready reckoner" ways of working out whether funding trends are good or not so good, and give participants an opportunity to ask questions they have always wanted to have answered about the budget but have been too afraid to ask!

The session will be particularly helpful for people preparing for the budget lockup on 30 April 2019.

Presenter: Professor David Hayward

Professor David Hayward is an economist and former Director of the Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) RMIT Future Social Service Institute. He was previously the Dean of RMIT’s School of Global, Urban and Social Studies (2009 – 2016). He has undertaken extensive research around the funding of social services and social policy and is a regular media commentator on state politics and budgets.
