Description

The VCE Environmental Science Teachers Conference will bring together our exciting and innovative network group to share and discuss a variety of aspect of the VCE Environmental Study Design in order to best prepare ourselves and our students.

There will be five presenters on the day and include:

Oliver Taylor (Sunbury Downs College): Development of Assessment Report on Climate Change.

A presentation on how a developmental rubric was created based on the Environmental Science Study Design ensuring that each dot point is covered. Then using the rubric we will create a Guttmann chart to show which skills the students are lacking.

Marika Wong (St Monicas College): Developing a SAC on Biodiversity.

This presentation will share a classroom activity and discuss SAC approaches for Unit 3 AoS1– Is maintaining biodiversity worth a sustained effort? The presentation will also incorporate discussion of ideas for completing the Unit 4 Practical Investigation on Biodiversity.

Maria James (VCAA): The good, the bad and the ugly - Frank and Fearless Enviromental Science

During this presentation Maria will be discussing aspects of the audit process after the first year of the new study design. This session will be an open discussion where teachers will be encouraged to engage with constructive feedback.

Peter Morgan (Cornish College): Reflections from a First Timer - Learning from your mistakes.

Opening with Peter's reflections on creating a program for a new course in a new school for a new learning management system Peter hopes that by admitting all his mistakes it will give everyone the courage to admit theirs and facilitate a discussion about what to do differently next year.

Jorja McKinnon (EEV): Representations in Environmental Science - What do students see?

Drawing on the literature found within the field of conceptual understanding of science Jorja will ask the audience to consider what it is we see and do not see in textbook representations of scientific phenomena.
