Using Systems Thinking to identify holes in your system

Systems thinking describes a range of Human Factors methods that assist humans to understand the socio-technical systems in which they exist. In this session, Mohammed Aburumman and Dr Tony Carden from WorkSafe Victoria will present two case studies.
These examples will show how using Systems Thinking methodology has identified failures and opportunities for improvement in the controls within two different industries and two very different hazard types.
Biography:
Dr Tony Carden is a Senior Ergonomist in the Human Factors and Ergonomics team at WorkSafe Victoria. Tony has a diverse range of work experience across a wide array of industry sectors including housing construction, electricity distribution, property maintenance, security, outdoor education and adventure guiding. Tony’s PhD is in Human Factors, specialising in the analysis, design and modification of complex systems of work. He is passionate about applying his specialty to safety, wellbeing and system performance. Tony’s current work centres on supporting the learning and application of systems thinking across WorkSafe and our partner organisations.
Mohammed Aburumman is a Senior Ergonomist with the Ergonomics and Human Factors Team in Specialist Services. He is a human factors specialist with consulting and research experience across a broad range of industries, with a particular focus on systems thinking. Prior to joining WorkSafe, Mohammed was a researcher at the Monash University Accident Research Centre (MUARC), where he also conducted a PhD investigating safety culture in the construction industry. Mohammed has also held previous roles as a safety consultant and project manager, and as a safety engineer in the oil and gas industry.
