Event description

Description

This is a hands-on workshop that will begin with an introduction to the meaning of 'structured, synthetic phonics' and how use of this approach enables students of any age to make sense of the alphabetic code when learning to read and spell.

Games can be used to motivate and encourage. They can be used co-operatively, not just competitively, and can play an important role in any systematic and sequential literacy program by providing a variety of opportunities for students to practise and extend essential skills at the same time as learning new vocabulary.

We will look at a range of card games, technologies and educational software, plus some ideas to create a few simple, inexpensive games of your own.

It is a practical session; so be prepared to get involved and play! This will help you to decide for yourself those that could be used at home, in school or in a tutoring session to engage and teach as students/your child learn to read through explicit teaching and practice.
