THIS PAGE IS FOR THE VETERINARIAN SEMINAR
TOPIC: Using joint taps in diagnosing lameness problems
Vet Stream with A/Prof Mark Glyde
Localising and diagnosing the cause of lameness in dogs and cats can be challenging.
Quadrupeds have the ability to shift their centre of mass and effectively 'mask' their lameness. In addition, while the majority of lameness in small animals comes from joint disease, identifying an enlarged/diseased joint can be very difficult. The prime example of this is shoulder problems where the surrounding muscle mass precludes reliable palpation.
Fortunately, any significant joint disease creates changes in the synovial fluid that are generally easy to interpret in-house or with the aid of clinical pathology services.
In this case-based session, Mark will use several video case studies starting with the orthopaedic examination, then working through x-rays and other imaging before performing the joint taps with two key objectives:
- Firstly, to simplify and build your confidence in the reliable collection of diagnostic joint fluid samples from the shoulder, elbow, carpus and stifle joints.
- Secondly, he will work through case studies showing how to easily interpret synovial fluid, mostly in-house, and what indications exist for submitting fluid for full analysis.
The aim of this seminar is to improve your knowledge, skills and confidence in using joint taps in diagnosing lameness due to joint problems.
