Description

This is a public lecture presented by Matthew P. Goodman, senior adviser for Asian Economics and holds the William E. Simon Chair in Political Economy at Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).

One of the first acts of new U.S. President Donald Trump on taking office in January was to withdraw the United States from the Trans-Pacific Partnership. TPP had been the organizing principle of the Obama Administration's economic engagement in the Asia-Pacific region. The Trump Administration has expressed a preference for bilateral trade agreements and threatened to close the U.S. market if trading partners do not take steps to reduce trade imbalances and eliminate "unfair" trade practices. How will this affect the reality and perception of U.S. economic engagement in the Asia Pacific, where America's military presence has generally been viewed as necessary but not sufficient? And how will this shape the economic strategies of Australia, China, and other countries in the region? Mr. Goodman will address these questions and offer an outlook for the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting in Vietnam in November.

Mr Goodman, as The Simon Chair, will explore current issues in international economic policy, with a focus on the Asia-Pacific region.

Before joining CSIS in early 2012, Mr Goodman was White House coordinator for Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the East Asia Summit. He also served as director for international economics on the National Security Council staff, helping the president prepare for G20 and G8 summits. Prior to the White House Mr Goodman was senior adviser to the under-secretary for economic energy and agricultural affairs at the U.S. Department of State.
