Description

Urban briefing No.2: Citizen Science in the City is the second in our 2016 series of soiree style networking events, to bring together those with a professional or personal interest in the topic, to hear from several knowledgeable speakers.

This is a continuation of the AIUS - SA's theme for 2016 on climate change and we'd like to invite you to join us to explore what an inspiring urban future might look like for Adelaide and South Australia, that’s good for people and the planet.

Guest speaker, Dr Philip Roetman from the Discovery Circle at the University of South Australia has been invovled in running innovative citizen science projects and events since 2007. One of the Discovery Circle's recent and well-known projects is Cat Tracker where people use GPS monitoring to see the roaming area for their pets. Citizen science is burgeoning. Globally, there are now thousands of projects and many millions of citizen scientists. These volunteers make valuable contributions to research in a broadening range of fields, from refining protein structures, to recording new species, to identifying new astronomical objects. As cities become more densely populated, we can harness this exploration and discovery to provide feedback on the development of natural, built and social environments. Residents can monitor the urban air, water, sound and light. Residents can monitor flora and fauna, food production and influenza. Engaging residents to contribute to the monitoring of our cities will enrich their urban experience and empower them to participate in planning processes with a rich understanding of the dynamic city environment.

Dr Paul Willis, CEO of the Science Exchange will also speak briefly about RiAUS - Australia’s Science Channel in relation to the science of our urban environments.
