Description

Watch the 2018 Mardi Gras with UNSW Sydney staff and students

UNSW Sydney is proud to celebrate our wonderfully diverse staff, students and alumni.

On Saturday 3 March, 2018, 70 UNSW staff and students will march in the 40th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.

Join us on campus before the parade as we gather and walk down Anzac Parade together to watch our fellow staff and students as they march.

MEETING POINT The Globe Lawn, University Mall, UNSW Kensington Campus

END POINT The Taphouse Pub, 122 Flinders St, Darlinghurst, 2010

DURATION Approx 1 hour (the distance walked is just over 4km)

Please note that The Taphouse Pub is where the walk ends. We do not have any viewing spaces reserved inside or outside the pub. Participants are free to move to any point along the parade route from here to find a vantage point that suits them.

Participant information

As this is a free social event, all participants must agree to abide by the guidelines listed below. We strongly recommend everyone planning to attend registers their interest so we can track the numbers and keep you up-to-date with the plans. Please note that staff and students participating in the event need to respect the UNSW staff and student codes of conduct.

  • Getting thirsty – We will provide some water for walkers. However, if the Sydney summer strikes, we recommend that you bring a water bottle from home as well.
  • Getting rowdy – We ask that no alcohol be consumed while walking from UNSW Kensington campus to the parade. We also recommend that alcohol is not consumed before the walk. Alcohol + Exercise + Road Works for the Light Rail = A Recipe for Disaster! The walk terminates at a pub (The Taphouse) for those who are over 18 years of age and thirsty after all that exercise. Anyone who appears to have consumed illicit substances will be asked not to participate in this event.
  • Getting through the roadworks – Anzac Parade is under construction at the moment and the available foot paths are much smaller than in previous years. These restrictions must be respected, so we ask that you walk carefully. We also ask that you keep an eye on your fellow walkers who may require assistance over unpredictable terrains.
  • Getting through the weather – This event will go ahead, rain, hail or shine. Therefore, we ask participants to consider the forecast. If the day is likely to be a scorcher, please bring some water and sunscreen. If we’re expecting a deluge, bring an umbrella, a hat, a poncho, or maybe a combination of the three.
  • Getting ready – We ask that all participants choose sensible walking shoes for this event. The walk is roughly 4km, and you’ll be walking for about an hour (depending on roadworks, and your fellow commuters). Also, please consider the weather when planning your outfit. Rainbow, glitter hot pants might be better for the sunshine than the rain.
  • Getting home – UNSW and your friendly walking leaders will keep a close eye on you as we walk to the parade. But once we reach The Taphouse Pub, you are free to go on your merry way to find an ideal viewing spot. It is your responsibility to make your way home safely.
  • Accessibility - We have accessible options available for anyone wishing to view the parade and support fellow staff and students that are unable to make the journey on foot down Anzac Parade. Please contact Joanna Holcombe (j.holcombe@unsw.edu.au) to see what options are available.
  • Unexpected hazards – Sometimes people use big celebrations as an excuse to act foolishly. If you encounter any revellers that are making you uncomfortable or ill at ease, UNSW security representatives will be walking beside you. They will be easily identifiable, and they will be able to help keep you safe.
  • Bringing family and friends - If you're bringing family members or friends, please ensure they register for the event through Eventbrite. For anyone thinking about bringing kids or older folk, please use your best judgement in relation to the weather, walking terrain and the distance of the walk when considering whether or not to bring them on the walk (we'd hate for anyone to get too tired and miss the parade).
