Panel Sessions & Panelists

Big Data - 6pm - 6:45pm

Big data is a field that will drastically change the world we live in; for better or worse. Learn about its far-reaching applications and how you can be involved through your postgraduate degree. Join these leading academics as they discuss big data in relation to our jobs, lives and the world we live in:

  • Prof. Tomasz Bednarz, UNSW Art & Design - Tomasz is Associate Professor and Director of Visualisation at the Expanded Perception and Interaction Centre (EPICentre). His work takes a holistic approach to the problems facing the collation, analytics and display of big data.

  • Prof. Maurice Pagnucco, UNSW Engineering - Maurice is a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering and Deputy Dean (Education). His research is focussed on Artificial Intelligence with particular emphasis on Cognitive Robotics, Belief Change and Reasoning About Actions.

  • Prof. Louisa Jorm, UNSW Medicine - Louisa is the Foundation Director of the Centre for Big Data Research in Health. She is an Australian leader in, and high-profile advocate for the proper use of health data in research.

  • Dr Gery Geenens, UNSW Science - Dr Geenens is a statistician whose research mostly lies in developing in nonparametric copula models for dependence modelling and nonparametric methods for functional data analysis.

  • Peter Leonard, UNSW Business School - Peter Leonard is an esteemed Professor of Practice within the School of Information Systems and Technology Management and the School of Taxation and Business Law. Peter’s career as a business lawyer has focused on advising data-driven businesses.

Sustainability - 6:45pm - 7:30pm

Is our current way of life sustainable for both humans and the planet? The issue of sustainability now impacts all aspects of our lives on a daily basis. Hear from these leading academics from the across the university about sustainability and its implications for the future of our societies:

  • Dr Susanne Schmeidl, UNSW Arts & Social Sciences - Dr Scmeidl is a Senior Lecturer in Global Development. She has worked for over two decades as a scholar-practitioner at the intersection of security and development.

  • Dr Phillip Oldfield, UNSW Built Environment - Dr Oldfield is Director of the Architecture program at UNSW Built Environment. Dr. Oldfield’s research interests are focused primarily on tall building design, sustainability, liveability, and embodied carbon.

  • Dr Tracy Wilcox, UNSW Business School - Dr Wilcox's research and practice interest is in responsible management. She is passionate about business ethics and sustainability education

  • Dr Aline Jaeckel, UNSW Law - Dr Jaeckel's work focuses on marine environmental law and ocean governance, with a particular interest in deep seabed mineral mining.
