The Leadership

The world is crying out for a new model of leadership, but what is it? One woman thinks she has the answer. Australian CEO and ‘dreamer’ Fabian Dattner, leads an international group of 76 female scientists on an Antarctic voyage designed to transform them “into the sort of leaders they want to be.” Her hope is that once these women are primed to lead in science, they will be able to make meaningful change around the world. But on board Dattner’s own leadership style and philosophy are both severely tested, as the women’s deeply personal stories of workplace harassment and more are revealed. Set against the planet’s last untouched wilderness, The Leadership delivers an altogether unexpected and original reflection on what it takes to be a good leader, while unearthing the profoundly troubling systemic obstacles to women’s advancement in science and beyond.

MEET THE PANEL:

Professor Sarah Brough is an alumna of the Homeward Bound Project and is currently leading Australia into a new astronomical survey of the southern sky. She has been a key member of three major Australian-led surveys of the galaxies and leads a Legacy Survey of Space and Time working group dedicated to investigating very faint signatures of galaxy formation. As the former Associate Dean of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in UNSW’s Faculty of Science and former chair of the Astronomical Society of Australia’s Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity in Astronomy Chapter, Professor Brough is a keen advocate for diversity in science and committed to creating an inclusive UNSW community.

Ms. Isabelle Kingsley is a researcher, science communicator and educator. As Research Associate for the Office of the Women in STEM Ambassador, Isabelle investigates gender issues to drive systemic change for gender equity in STEM. Specifically, Isabelle is leading a national study that examines the effects of anonymising the assessment of research grant proposals to reduce gender bias. She is also developing national evaluation guidelines to evaluate what works in STEM gender equity programs.

Dr. Fatemeh Vafaee is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences, UNSW-Sydney. Fatemeh's Artificial Intelligence in Biomedicine Laboratory at UNSW is developing advanced AI to address multiple biomedical pressing problems. Fatemeh is also committed to foster gender equity at UNSW and beyond. She serves as an Executive Committee member of Women in Research Network working to progress an equitable and inclusive research culture at UNSW through support, information and advocacy. She has engaged in supporting and informing the community by organising outreach and Share & Connect networking events on topical issues for women in research.

Dr. Steph Gardner is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at UNSW in the Centre for Marine Science and Innovation. Her goal is to raise awareness for and diagnose the problems facing reef ecosystems today and safeguard vulnerable marine ecosystems. Steph is also a recent alumna of Homeward Bound Project.

Professor Dane McCamey is an experimental condensed matter physicist whose research focuses on the impact of spin on the electronic properties of materials and devices for solar energy generation and quantum enabled electronics. He is also the Associate Dean of Enterprise and Engagement at UNSW Science and the Deputy Director in the ARC Centre for Excellence for Exciton Science.
