Event description

Description

Are you currently researching or working in Africa or are you keen to hear more from those who are?

UNSW has exciting projects, networks and collaborations worldwide. The focus of the Africa Roundtable is to bring together those working in countries across Africa to share their expertise, consider collaborations and forge partnerships.

Led by the UNSW Institute for Global Development’s Academic Co-Leads for Africa, Professor Prem Ramburuth (UNSW Business) and Dr. Alec Thornton (UNSW Canberra), as well as Professor Anthony Zwi (UNSW Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), the event will provide an opportunity to:

  • learn about UNSW research and development projects in Africa
  • identify and meet others working in your countries of interest
  • exchange ideas and share information on potential pathways for Australia to become better partners with African institutions
  • consider opportunities for collaboration and funding

ABOUT THE FACILITATORS

Professor Prem Ramburuth was appointed Academic Lead for Uganda in 2016 and oversees four projects at Gulu University. Prem is the immediate past President of the UNSW Academic Board and a Professor in International Business, focusing on research and teaching in Cross-Cultural and Global Management in Business and Higher Education. She is also the UNSW representative on the Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) and AAUN attendee of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA). She has been actively engaged with the Office of the South African High Commission for many years and, more recently, with the Office of the Ugandan High Commission.

Dr Alec Thornton is a Senior Lecturer and Discipline Stream Coordinator in Geography, School of Physical, Environmental & Mathematical Sciences (PEMS), at UNSW Canberra. Alec is actively engaged in participatory research to achieving sustainable urban and rural development. He conducts this research in Sierra Leone, South Africa, Zambia and Ethiopia. He is Research Associate at the University of Johannesburg, in the School of Tourism & Hospitality. Alec was vice president (2010-2017) of The African Studies Association of Australasia and the Pacific (AFSAAP) and is co-editor of the Australasian Review of African Studies (ARAS), and editorial board member for Urban Forum (2009-present) and Applied Geography (2009-2015).

Professor Anthony Zwi focuses on global health and development policy and has interests in their interface with equity, social justice and human rights. He seeks to build partnership between Australia, the Asia-Pacific, and Africa and to promote capabilities in global health, development policy, and disaster planning, management and response. He currently leads a range of projects including one focused on human resources for health in public health emergencies and two realist reviews - one on Community Based Disaster Risk Management and the other on the Evidence for Effective Prevention of Sexual Violence in Conflict and Emergencies. He has worked in a number of countries in Africa, as well as in Timor-Leste (East Timor), Sri Lanka, the Solomon Islands, Vietnam and Cambodia. He is interested in understanding, and improving mechanisms, to facilitate evidence-informed health and development policy. Professor Zwi is keen to build links between humanitarian relief and development organisations and academic institutions.

This event is being held as a part of UNSW’s Global Development Month supported by the Institute for Global Development.
