Unlocking the secrets of Abbotsford Convent – special social history tour
Thu. 27 April 2017, 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm AEST
Join us for a fascinating tour of the Abbotsford Convent and discover its diverse history; from its beginnings as a meeting place for the Kulin Nation, its use as a closed monastic-site by the Good Shepherd Sisters for more than a century, to its place today as a leading arts, culture and education community. On this walking tour, you will also learn how the Abbotsford Convent Coalition (ACC) was formed and how they saved the site from high-rise development after a seven year community campaign. Living memories and stories from former residents, ACC members and volunteers will also be shared, helping tell the story of this significant heritage site.
Following the tour, join author and tenant Maureen McCarthy for a reading from her book The Convent, which is based on the author’s mother’s experience as a Convent resident.
