Description

This two-day training provides participants with a comprehensive and thorough understanding of the issues facing individuals around trauma and substance use. Over the two days, this workshop will provide skills and practical strategies to understand and assist clients in providing treatment and ongoing service delivery.

Learning outcomes:

  • Learn how to practically apply an integrated trauma and addiction model and approach
  • Understand clinical styles and approaches including pre-treatment, assessment, motivation, and harm reduction
  • Discover the primary therapeutic attitude that needs to be demonstrated by the therapist throughout a session
  • Risk/harm assessments and unintentional drug-use harm to self or others and strategies for regulating clients
  • Gain valuable insights from case studies and complex clients- their vulnerabilities and dual needs
  • Learn about brain injury and offending links, dual diagnosis and behavioural indicators
  • Understand the impact of frontal lobe dysfunction and other alcohol-related neurological problems
  • Find out more about the impact of personality disorders (PD) and issues with PD diagnoses, along with personalities and traits prone to a higher risk of addiction
  • How to best treat dual-diagnosed clients and forensic clients
  • The impact of traumatic experiences and compulsive behaviour and the challenges of trying to address at a cognitive level
  • Understand AOD use challenges and the seven main AOD use trigger types
  • Learn the golden rules of craving management
  • Understand substance use and addiction as well as behavioural addictions, along with addictivity and the likelihood of addicting
  • Gain deeper insights into trauma and addiction and bio-psycho-social and humanistic models and the addiction tree
  • Ensure you’re aware of key habit triggers and complex self-medicating
  • Understand tolerance, withdrawal, dependence symptoms and cycles, and addiction vs dependence and how they vary


Training facilitator:

Cara Crossan, Msc Addiction Psychology & Counselling, Dip Clinical Supervision, Registered Sex Addiction Therapist

Cara is a qualified and accredited trauma and addiction therapist, consultant and clinical supervisor. She has extensive experience providing training in all areas of trauma and addiction, having worked in private, not-for-profit and the criminal justice system in Ireland, United Kingdom, Holland and Australia.

What are my transport/ parking options for getting to and from the event?

Parking: There is local parking available in Turner St, Sackville St and Easey St; alternative parking is available off Lulie St (on the eastern side of the Railway line off Johnston St), adjacent to Victoria Park stadium. Please be aware of clearway zones during certain times of the day.

Public transport: We are a five minute walk from Victoria Park station (South Morang, Hurtbridge and Greensborough lines). Our office is also accessible from bus routes on Hoddle St (towards Richmond or Clifton Hill) and Johnston St (towards City/ Lonsdale St or Kew)

$880 (for two days) - payable on credit card or invoice on request

Includes morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea (please specify dietary requirements on registration)

Participants will also receive a colour bound workbook


Cancellation Policy?

  • 14 days notice or more: no penalty
  • 8 – 13 days notice: 25% of total training fee
  • 3 – 7 days notice: 50% of total training fee
  • 48 hours notice or less: 100% of total training fee
