Course Outline/Aim

This training supports CHSP providers to understand and navigate the role of a supporter in compliance with new legislative obligations, while upholding older people’s autonomy and rights. It draws directly from the Aged Care Act Rules, Support at Home Manual V3, and the Strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards—especially Standard 1: The Person.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify who can be appointed as a supporter under the New Aged Care Act 2024, and how that process occurs
  • Describe the key rights, responsibilities and limitations of a supporter’s role
  • Engage appropriately and confidently with supporters in ways that uphold the older person’s autonomy, dignity, and preferences
  • Apply supported decision-making principles in interactions involving a supporter
  • Recognise the obligations of CHSP providers under the Strengthened Quality Standards, especially relating to dignity, privacy, and the role of family and advocates
  • Respond to situations where the supporter’s involvement may conflict with the older person’s wishes or rights
