Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Do you have children in your class with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)?

Or - have you noticed other children who:

• Can’t seem to get started or finish tasks?

• Have difficulty making or keeping friends?

• Get upset when asked to switch from one thing to another?

Children with ASD may struggle with understanding social and emotional cues. They may not understand that others think differently to them. Many children on the autism spectrum have specific difficulties relating to executive function. These challenges may result in difficult behaviours that impact on not just their ability to participate in learning tasks, but also on social interactions with adults and other children.

To best support children on the autism spectrum, we need to understand a child’s individual profile and learning style. We need to be aware of “what is ASD?” but also how it actually impacts on the children that we know.

Who should attend:

  • Child care educators

  • Preschool teachers and support staff

  • Junior primary/primary teachers and support staff

  • Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) educators

  • Allied Health Professionals wanting to learn more about ASD

Benefits of attending:

Learn about:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder

  • Theory of Mind, Executive Function and Weak Central Coherence and how these profiles relate to learning

  • Sensory behaviours – why these may be occurring and what could be impacting them

  • Behavioural supports for students with ASD

  • Environmental needs for individual children

  • The importance of your relationship with each child and their family
