Understanding Autism

Intervention strategies, principles of best practice in the support of individuals on the autism spectrum.

This workshop is aimed at anyone who works alongside or supports people who are on the Autism Spectrum, this could include disability support workers, planners, DES Consultants and educators.

This workshop will be facilitated by Autism Tasmania Inc., with aims to broaden your knowledge of autism through participation in engaging learning activities, including presentations and discussions with adults on the spectrum.

On completion you will have a broad understanding of autism, greater confidence in interacting with individuals on the spectrum and skills.

The workshop will cover:

  • Current research on autism spectrum disorders, including prevalence, gender ratios, adult outcomes;
  • The characteristics of autism and the impact on individual functioning;
  • Evidence-based intervention strategies and principles of best practice in the support of clients on the autism spectrum.

Launceston Faciliator - Robyn Thomas BSc, GradDipEdPsych, MAutismSt

Robyn is Autism Tasmania’s Training Manager. She has been with Autism Tasmania for six years, and has delivered workshops covering a diverse range of autism-specific topics for parents and family carers of children on the spectrum, community groups and professionals from the health, disability and education sectors. She has been awarded a Masters in Autism Studies from Griffith University’s Autism Centre of Excellence and has practical experience in teaching, supporting and working alongside children and adults on the autism spectrum in a variety of settings. She values opportunities to work collaboratively with individuals on the spectrum and has a passion for empowering members of Tasmania’s autism community to live meaningful and purposeful lives by increasing society’s awareness and understanding of autism.
