Event description
Hear experts explaining the wide impacts of trauma and the interesting treatments that are available with local practitioners

About this Event

There are two components plus a break:

1.30-2.30 talk by Dr Gwenyth Francis

2.30-3.00 tea break for relaxation and questions

3.00- 4.00 talk by Ms Jeanne Wearne

Dr Francis will talk about the impact that trauma can have on the body, including an understanding of the fight and flight response which underpins all trauma reactions. She will discuss the impact of trauma on the body and brain, especially the changes that occur with childhood trauma. Trauma is a term that covers events that overwhelm the individual’s capacity to cope. It includes accidents, natural disasters, illness and death of loved ones and all forms of violence. A key component of an event that causes traumatisation to the individual is the presence of helplessness and powerlessness.

Trauma, for children, can also include things adults do not look on as traumatic, such as some medical interventions and treatments. It is now well-acknowledged that bullying has a profound effect on everyone but especially on young teenage girls. If trauma is not properly looked after, the changes can become permanent and lay down the vulnerability to mental and physical health problems later in life. Recognition of this is very important for our society and for the individuals who often suffer in silence, not understanding that they can be helped.

Various forms of treatment approaches will be discussed and Jeanne Wearne will particularly address the way the body will hold trauma and demonstrate somatic processes and resources to heal trauma.

Dr. Francis and Jeanne Wearne are both somatic psychotherapists and work in the field of trauma, especially the impact of childhood trauma.
