About this event

Course Overview

Understanding and Responding to Sexual Violence is part of the University’s commitment to providing a supportive and safe environment to prevent sexual assault and sexual harassment on campus. This training session assists participants in understanding what constitutes sexual assault and sexual harassment in our educational institutions, workplaces, and community and provide detailed and practical skills and strategies in responding to a disclosure.

This training is available to all ANU students and staff members.

• Understand the drivers behind sexual assault and sexual harassment and how it is experienced within the Australian and university context

• Identify ways to create safer environments

• Understand what constitutes as a disclosure of sexual assault and/or sexual harassment

• Respond appropriately to disclosures of sexual assault and sexual harassment from students and staff

• Identify available support services and existing protocols

What the course will cover

• What is sexual harassment and sexual assault: Establish the broader context around sexual violence including, examining the attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that normalise problematic behaviour, demographic groups experience of sexual violence and specifics relating to university settings

• Disclosures of sexual assault and harassment: What is a disclosure relating to sexual violence, how does a disclosure differ to a report, how and why do people seek support

• Responding to disclosures: Individuals responding to a disclosure of sexual violence in a safe, supportive, and empathetic way

• Safe spaces, support services and reporting options: How to create safe work and learning spaces, on and off-campus support services for those who have experienced sexual violence, university procedures and protocols around disclosures, reporting options and advocacy, the role of the Respectful Relationships Unit in organisational culture change
