Event description
This 3-hour training increase participants’ awareness of LGBTI people’s everyday lives and the pressures they experience.

About this Event

THE ISSUES

Research shows that members of sex and gender diverse minorities - that is lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people - are subject to high levels of everyday discrimination and abuse. LGBTI people are the only community in Australia where discrimination in the provision of goods and services is still legally sanctioned.

A review of recent research on LGBTI people’s disaster experiences shows that their already higher levels of discrimination and vulnerability are magnified during and after an emergency. LGBTI people report being subject to increased discrimination from both emergency service personnel and other clients; loss of LGBTI safe spaces and privacy; and increased fear and anxiety in accessing mainstream services, including faith-based providers, due to the expectation of discrimination and abuse.

TRAINING AIMS, METHODS AND OUTCOMES

The training encourages participants to apply these understandings in their own professional practice and in the development of LGBTI-inclusive emergency services.

The training relies on a range of learning techniques and materials that include:

• Adult learning principles that build on participants’ wealth of life experiences

• Participant reflection, facilitated discussion and group exercises • Short YouTube videos

• Research and data on:

  • LGBTI people’s health and wellbeing
  • LGBTI people’s experiences of disasters and emergency situations; and
  • Emergency service personnel attitudes toward and knowledge of LGBTI people’s specific needs

• The barriers LGBTI people face in accessing emergency services

• Resources and practical tips to assist individuals and emergency services develop LGBTI-inclusive practices, procedures and policies.

DEMAND

In Victoria, there has been a concerted effort by government to ensure that diverse, inclusive practice becomes the baseline for the delivery of all publicly-funded services, including the provision of LGBTI-inclusive mainstream services.

This training will assist the emergency sector increase its knowledge of LGBTI people and its capacity to meet their particular needs. It will also assist individual staff and agencies in the ongoing development of organisational systems and professional practice that are inclusive of LGBTI people, and population diversity more broadly. In doing so, it will increase the capacity of the entire sector to prepare and respond to emergencies.
