Description

Turning your life into fiction

Everybody has a story – from the stories of your family to a dream you once had, from newspaper clippings to the events that changed a life. Take a journey through the writing process, bringing your ideas to the page and turning them into exciting prose. Through workshopping, exercises and group discussions, produce stories and explore ideas around using real stories in fiction of any length.

About Laura Jean McKay

Laura Jean McKay is the author of Holiday in Cambodia, a short story collection that explores the electric zone where local and foreign lives meet. Holiday in Cambodia has been shortlisted for three national book awards, including the 2014 NSW Premier’s Literary Award, the 2014 Queensland Literary Award and the 2015 Asher Award for books on an anti-war theme. Laura’s writing has been published in The Best Australian Stories, Award Winning Australian Writing and the North American Review. She is a PhD candidate at the University of Melbourne and the recipient of a Martin Bequest Traveling Scholarship.

Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?

This course is for participants aged 18 years and above. If you are accessing the QWC member tickets you may be asked to show proof of membership.

What are my transport/parking options for getting to and from the event?

Queensland Writers Centre is located on Level 2 of the State Library of Queensland.

There are several parking and transportation options:

  • Parking underneath State Library or Queensland Museum costs $16 per entry.
  • There is limited street parking available on Merivale Street, Montague Road and Hope Street at an hourly rate.
  • A drop-off point is located on the ring road outside SLQ, next to the bus stops.
  • The Cultural Precinct BusWay and South Brisbane Train Station are a short walk from State Library.

What can I bring into the event?

You can bring either pen and paper or a laptop along with you to write with. If you do bring a laptop, please remember to bring a power adaptor if necessary.

The venue runs quite a cool air-conditioning system so we advise bringing a jacket, jumper or cardigan with you.

What's the refund policy?

If Queensland Writers Centre cancels an event, we will try to reschedule it for a later date. If we cannot reschedule the event, or if you are unable to attend on the amended date, your payment will be refunded in full.
