About this event

Sincere and authentic, TRUE VISION is a documentary that explores how people deal with unexpected obstacles in their lives and the perceptions that go hand in hand with diagnosis and disability. The film is written, directed and produced by documentary filmmaker Diana Fisk and executive produced by award-winning feature film and documentary producer Sue Maslin. Following a national broadcast premiere in 2020 on ABC’s Compass on Sunday March 15, Vision Australia and the team behind TRUE VISION has announced a national tour of the film supported by the Percy and Ruby Haddy Foundation, as managed by Equity Trustees.

The next event in this series will take place in Melbourne and be free to attendees, include a screening of the film (28 minutes) and a moderated panel discussion by Dee mason on the key themes of the film with filmmaker and mother Diana Fisk, a Vision Australia therapist and Australian Paralympian Jessica Gallagher. This event will be introduced by Vision Australia CEO Ron Hooton.

The Performance Space, Library @ The Docks is an accessible space with elevators from Ground Floor to Level 2 (Performance Space) + all floors have ambulant bathrooms. The number 11 tram stop (closest to the Library) accessible. The film screening will include audio descriptions and captions, for any specific access requirements please contact diana@dianafisk.com

ABOUT THE FILM: TRUE VISION charts the journey of Diana Fisk, whose son Alfie at four months old was diagnosed with Nystagmus – a vision condition caused by an abnormal function in the brain. As Diana researched the condition, words like 'abused' 'bullied' and 'embarrassed' appeared as descriptors of the life children with Nystagmus experience growing up. Determined to provide a better future for Alfie, Diana needed to find someone who understood the challenges she and her family were about to face. Paralympian Jessica Gallagher was the inspiration Diana was looking for. Despite being diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease - a type of macular degeneration that causes a loss of central vision - Jess has represented Australia in three different sports and is the first Australian athlete to medal at both the Winter and Summer Games. TRUE VISION weaves the story of Jess Gallagher’s incredible achievements alongside the determination of Diana Fisk as she navigates daily life with Alfie (now 6). “This project was deeply personal to me and I am so happy to be taking it around Australia as a way to ignite a conversation on perceptions related to disability” says Diana. “In telling our story, I wanted to discover how best I could free Alfie of all the limitations and misconceptions that are applied to people living with a disability. These events are not only for those living with a disability and the families around them, but greater communities interested in broadening their understandings of what it might be like to live with a disability.

Vision Australia’s CEO Ron Hooton “Vision Australia’s mission is to support people who are blind or have low vision to live the life they choose and True Vision perfectly illustrates what this means. I can think of no better way to show people that blindness or low vision is no barrier to people leading a full and active life and chasing their dreams. We’re thrilled by the idea of True Vision reaching new audiences across Australia and I know they will be moved by the amazing stories of Diana, Alfie and Jess.

A TOUR OF TRUE VISION in partnership with Vision Australia and supported by the Percy and Ruby Haddy Foundation as managed by Equity Trustees, will be coming to cities in every state in 2021. For further information please visit: truevisionfilm.com
