Description

MacLean's wishes to invite you to the celebration of three new poetry books by three Newcastle poets: Judy Johnson’s Dark Convicts, Magdalena Ball’s Unmaking Atoms, and Jenny Blackford’s The Loyalty of Chickens.

The event will be held in-store at 4pm on May 20th 2017. Cheese, wine and excellent conversation will be provided. All you have to bring is your wonderful self (and some hearty guffaws). Entry is free, however RSVP-ing is a must.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Magdalena Ball is a novelist, poet, reviewer and interviewer, and is the editor of Compulsive Reader (www.compulsivereader.com). She has been widely published in literary journals, anthologies, and online, and is the author of several published books of poetry and fiction, including most recently the novel Black Cow (Bewrite Books), and the poetry book Unmaking Atoms (Ginninderra Press).

Judy Johnson has published six poetry collections and several chapbooks. Her prizes include the Victorian Premier’s Award, the Wesley Michel Wright Prize (twice) and her work as been shortlisted in the WA Premier’s Award. Her verse novel Jack was on the Sydney and Melbourne University syllabus. She is one of four editors of a landmark 25-year retrospective anthology of Australian verse, Contemporary Australian Poetry. Her new book, Dark Convicts, is a poetic exploration of her two First Fleet ancestors, who were African-American ex-slaves.

Jenny Blackford’s poems and stories have appeared in Australian Poetry Journal, Cosmos and Westerly. In 2013 Pitt Street Poetry published an illustrated pamphlet of her cat poems, The Duties of a Cat.. Her first full-length poetry collection is The Loyalty of Chickens, also from Pitt Street Poetry, for readers 11 years to adult. She has won awards in the ACU Prize for Literature, the Henry Lawson Verse competition, the Scarlet Stiletto Short Story Awards and more. Jenny also writes for children, and her work is regularly published in the School Magazine.
