Introduction to Trauma-Informed Care 1-Day Professional Development Training for Early Childhood Educators

This training is designed to begin the development of awareness and an understanding of the science-informed and evidence-based, principles, concepts, processes and guidelines in becoming a trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive early childhood education centre. With this awareness and understanding a trauma-informed and trauma-sensitive approach can begin to be implemented.

Learning Outcomes:

Awareness, Knowledge & Understanding of the;

  • Neuroscience & Neurobiology of Trauma, Abuse & Violence and its adverse impacts on Brain, Neurophysiological, Relational, Social & Emotional Development & Academic/Scholastic/Vocational progress & achievement
  • Neuroscience & Neurobiology of Secure & Insecure Attachment as a consequence of exposure to Trauma & Traumatic Events
  • The concept of what is being termed; ATTACHMENT-BASED EDUCATION and LEARNING
  • Neuroscience & Neurobiology of our Stress Response, Stress Chemicals, HPA Axis, Sympathetic Nervous System & Parasympathetic Nervous System & the role they play in our Physical, Emotional, Mental and Psychological Health & Wellbeing & the Resolution of Trauma
  • Neuroscience & Neurobiology of Mindfulness and Mindsight Techniques & Practices as a basis for the Resolution of Trauma
  • Definitions and understanding of what Complex Trauma and Developmental Trauma means and how children’s behaviours are driven from this core of traumatic stress
  • Concepts such as Post-Traumatic Growth (PTG), Resilience, Vicarious Resilience, Compassion Satisfaction, Flourishing, Thriving & Altruism as the "up-side" to trauma & traumatic events.
  • The Work Health & Safety (WHS) risks for workers/teachers from Compassion Fatigue, Vicarious Trauma, Secondary Traumatic Stress & Burnout as a natural consequence of working with infants, children, families and communities with complex trauma histories.

Practical Skills:

  • Practical skills in Workplace Wellbeing Institute's Attachment Relational Therapeutic (ART) Model of Trauma-Informed Care & Practice (TICP) (e.g. Rogerian Principles of Person-Centred Theory such as Unconditional Positive Regard & Empathetic Communication) that promote Safety & Security through our core concept: "The Relationship is the Intervention"
  • Instruction on applying Professor Dan Siegel’s “Hand Model of the Brain” as a tool in understanding the impacts of trauma & stress on our Neurophysiology, Brain Development, Learning Capacity and Behaviour.

Instruction/Demonstration of the following Practical Mindfulness/Mindsight Skills & Practices as a Methodology in the Resolution of Trauma, both Primary & Secondary:

  1. KICHIDO: A movement-based Mindfulness Technique that teaches individuals about how to remain calm, grounded and present in all situations. This is achieved through a conscious awareness on the breath and the body through slow and rhythmic movement exercises.
  2. Breath-Awareness Practice: A sitting Mindfulness Practice that connects the individual with their natural breathing rhythms and cycles in awareness.
  3. Body Scan: A sitting Mindfulness Practice that focuses attention on the body using the breath as a way of releasing tension, stress and pent-up emotions. The body scan also trains the mind to develop a more expansive awareness from one moment to the next
  4. Body Grounding Exercises. A variety of Mindfulness Practices that ground and centre the body in this present moment as a way of releasing tension, stress and pent-up emotions
  5. Embedded Group Relational Mindfulness: Group Mindfulness Practice that enhances group Emotional, Social & Relational Intelligence Capacities & Capabilities (how to switch on & maintain our Social Engagement Systems)
