Description

How Melbourne can enable the shared mobility revolution

We have entered a new era in transportation. The emergence of shared mobility services, and the technological platforms underpinning them, have the potential to revolutionise the ways in which we travel.

Combined with the development of autonomous vehicles, electric vehicles, and unmanned aerial vehicles, web-based service providers are fundamentally challenging traditional forms of transport. With greater numbers of people valuing on-demand access over ownership, cities and jurisdictions around the globe are grappling with how to manage, and regulate, the changes upon us.

Melbourne, and Victoria, is no exception. In recent years, we have witnessed the disruption to the taxi industry and the ongoing legal battles that has ensued. We also saw the trialing of various bike-sharing services, which created various challenges for the operators and regulatory authorities alike.

Successfully navigating these operational and regulatory challenges posed by the emergence of shared mobility services offers great opportunities for Melbourne. Not only will the city’s global brand be enhanced, it will help create a healthy, livable community for generations to come.

To navigate this new terrain, there must be an appreciation that the existing regulatory landscape must be flexible and responsive to embrace the opportunities presented by such disruption.

This event will bring together Committee for Melbourne members, and key stakeholders, to explore:

  • How shared mobility services will shift land-use planning and design.

  • The increasingly important role of efficient, mass transit options in a growing city, and how shared mobility solutions can complement these.

  • The planning obstacles and regulatory reforms needed for the roll-out of various shared mobility operations.

  • What it will take for Melbourne to be a recognised global leader in technology-led transport solutions.

  • How embracing technology-led transport solutions will drive innovation, business investment, and positive social and environmental outcomes.

This event forms part of the Committee’s Transport Taskforce, which aims to foster a greater understanding of Melbourne’s transport challenges, identify key priorities for action, and advocate for change.
