Event description
A one-day professional development and showcase event for educators in Wyndham wanting to learn more about engaging students.

About this Event

This professional development day will bring together educators (primary, secondary, adults) and educational support workers to explore practice and partnerships that foster student & family centred learning, support transformative teaching and learning initiatives, and showcase and celebrate some of Wyndham’s best practice programs.

Trauma-informed practice and the REAL Program

The Berry St model of education shares strategies on reengaging students with the most challenging of behaviours. The trauma-informed and well-being approach has enabled students to achieve both personal and academically by improving cognitive function.

The REAL program is a model of re-engaging 9-12 year olds who have dropped out of school, using the Berry St model. This program has been running in a community setting in Broadmeadows for 4 years and is based on a trauma-informed approach.

Guest Speaker - Jaime de Lomo-Osorio Ricon

Jaime has had a long association with Banksia Gardens Community Services (BGCS), where he started volunteering as a Mathematics tutor 14 years ago. In his current role as Deputy CEO, Jaime has been responsible for the establishment of many of the organisation’s current programs and he has played a pivotal role in the $1.4m redevelopment of the organisation’s headquarters. Through years of direct service delivery Jaime has acquired expertise in the areas of youth engagement, education and community development. He is still highly involved in many of the organisation's youth and education programs and such as the Banksia Gardens Study Group, the holiday program and Project REAL, an initiative that supports upper primary school aged children who are severely disengaged from education. Jaime is extremely interested in trauma responsive practice and neuroscience and believes that everyone who works with children should have at least a basic understanding of these fields
