Event description

Description

This project aims to both introduce and to increase young trans and gender diverse people’s experience/interest and enthusiasm for drama. Together with participants, we will work to create a safe and inclusive workshop.

Transacting is an initiative of 'gendered intelligence' and the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama see http://www.transacting.co.uk/workshops.html Third-Way Theatre (Australia) and Working It Out (Australia) have partnered with these two organisations to create a pathway for young people here in Tasmania, who are curious or have a current interest in the arts. to develop skills, capacity and confidence. This project is ONE STEP in a longer-term vision which involves running workshops across the state, leading to students participating in a theatrical outcome with the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama (London) and ‘gendered intelligence’ (London)

More info contact: xris@workingitout.org.au or 0409 828 705 - Note: If your over 18 and would like to attend or help out contact the organiser above.

What happens in our workshops:

Our youth workshops explore the basics of drama through fun and interactive group exercises that aim to build confidence and expression as the session progresses.

It’s important that TransActing workshops provide a supportive and respectful space for everyone taking part. At the start of every session workshop leader/s go through guidelines to make sure that everyone feels safe.

Pronouns:

We start each session in a circle, each saying our name and our pronoun(s). Sometimes these things change for some people, week by week, so we do this, even when we think we know each other. For this workshop, we will do the same.

How practical will the class be:

You’ll be moving around, working individually, in pairs or in small groups. As we are exploring acting you will possibly feel pushed outside of your ‘comfort zone’ but not too much!

Whilst we want you to participate and follow teaching instructions, we are also mindful you need to take care of yourself.

The group:

There is a min of 20 (and we might be as small as 12). Some of you may know each other, and some of you may not know any other member of the group. Some of you have some experience of acting; some of you have very little experience. Some of you will be confident and some of you might be shy. There might be people with one or more disabilities.

You’re a mixed group, which is great and we are really focused on ALL of US supporting an inclusive and welcoming safe space. If you know you are a confident person who talks a lot, be mindful of allowing others the time they might need to grow in confidence. If you tend to be quiet in a group, try this project as an opportunity to speak out a little more than usual.

We will make space for allies if it's the only way you can get there so DO let us know if this is what you need.

Parental / carer permissions:

If you're under 18 you will need parental permission. That means someone ringing us or coming with a letter, or we can send a form - let us know. We recognise that for some people this might be a barrier as some students arent out. If you need support around this - want us to talk with parents/cares about the workshop let us know. Or if you have any other concerns, let us know.

What to wear:

You need to be comfortable enough to move freely. In some classes you’ll be breathing deeply, moving more than you might usually, possibly lying or sitting on the floor. Belts can get in the way or dig in, skirts restrict movement etc. Some people wear jogging bottoms/ leggings/ loose t-shirts so as to be comfortable and to leave ‘fashion’ at home. You choose what makes you feel most comfortable.

The times:

Please arrive 15 min ahead of the start time so you can be in the room and ready to begin. We all want to get the most out of each workshop and we like to start on time. The tutor will plan work for the full 2 hours!

Arrival / the Building and Toilets:

Either Jay or Kai will meet in reception and the room will be signposted. The building is disability accessible.

Toilets: There are non-gendered toilets on site and accessible toilets.

If you change your mind/ something crops up

Waiting List:

If the workshop is full please email xris@workingit out.org to put your name down on a waiting list.

For those who have booked if you change your mind Please let us know. If anyone decides on reflection, this project isn’t for them, or if something crops up and prevents you from attending that's fine again. just email xris@workingitout.org.au or text 0409 828 705 and let them know. That way we can give your place to someone else.
