Open Data in a Day

New to open data? Get started with this half day interactive class with our expert trainer Ellen Broad.

Whether you have some knowledge of open data, your organisation is interested in publishing open data or are completely new to it, this introductory, jargon-free course will give you a 360-degree view of the open data landscape in Australia and around the world.

Course aim

You will learn:

  • What open data is, its benefits and opportunities
  • Case studies of successful open data projects
  • How to minimise risks by understanding data licensing and certificates
  • How to discover and use open data
With a mixture of practical exercises, case studies and the latest learnings from the field of open data, our experts will remove the complexity of this area. Increase your confidence in working with open data.

Course topics covered

Session 1: Discovering open data
By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Define open data
  • Evaluate definitions of open data for different communities and requirements
  • Explain the difference between big, personal and open data
  • Describe the benefits of working with open data
  • Draw on successful case studies of open data use and publishing
  • Explain how open data sits in the current economic climate
  • Evaluate the success of open data projects and communities

Session 2: Managing risk
By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Describe how copyright and licensing relate to open data
  • Identify instances of open licences and effective application
  • Understand the risks and benefits associated with open licences

Session 3: Finding and publishing open data
By the end of the session you will be able to:

  • Identify ways to find open data
  • Evaluate tools for assessing the usability of open data
  • Suggest a number of ways to improve the publication of open data

Who is this course suitable for?

Open Data in a Day is ideal for those at the 'Explorer' level of the ODI's Open Data Skills Framework. It's designed to give you a comprehensive introduction to open data, answer questions you might have and leave you thinking about what you might do next.

It is suitable for government employees, private organisations, researchers, academics and students. Participants of previous courses have included: decision makers, managers, public servants, researchers, policy advisors, journalists, non-profit organisations, students, strategists, data owners and publishers.

What prior knowledge do you need?

No previous experience of data is required.

A laptop or iPad if you have one.

3 hours (9.30am to 12.30pm). Arrive between 9.00 and 9.30am.

Your trainer

Ellen Broad

Ellen is a leading international expert in open data and is an ODI certified open data trainer. Ellen just returned to Australia from the UK, where she was Head of Policy for the Open Data Institute. While in the UK, Ellen was recruited by then Secretary of State for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Elisabeth Truss (now Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary), as her expert adviser on data. Ellen steered Defra's #OpenDefra commitment to publishing 8,000 datasets as open data and changing the way Defra's 22,000 staff worked together. Ellen also designed the open data board game, Datopolis together with ODI CEO Jeni Tennison, which is being played in 19 countries.
