Data 101: Web Scraping

Want to learn how to interact with data more effectively? Data 101: Web Scraping will get you started with the concepts, tools and techniques you need to kick start your open data project.

Course aim

This workshop will teach you about web scraping, APIs and methods and tools for interacting with data using data science. This workshop will build on your existing knowledge and enable you to quickly apply the skills learned to your own data usage.

The workshop is adapted from the Library Carpentry material originally developed in the UK by staff at the British Library with foundations based on Software/Data Carpentry material.

By the end of the course you will be able to

  • explain terms, phrases, and concepts in data science
  • identify and use best practice in data structures
  • use your expanded knowledge of methods and tools for web scraping

Who is this for?

Learners with little to no prior computational experience who would like to learn how to get started with using data to unlock new knowledge and insight in areas of research, business decision-making, or policy development.

What prior knowledge do you need?

None

What to bring

  • A Wi-Fi enabled laptop, on which you have access to install software
  • If you would like to work with specific data sets, please bring them on your laptop
  • We also recommend a light jacket.

Course length

  • 3 hours (9.30am to 12:30pm). Arrive between 9.00 and 9.30am.

Your trainer

Belinda Weaver (QCIF) is an experienced Software Carpentry instructor and Internet trainer. She recently coordinated the Mozilla Science Global Sprint on Library Carpentry, working with over 20 people from six countries to update the material, some of which has been repurposed for this workshop.

Wednesday, 14 June 2017 from 9am for a 9.30am start to 12:30pm at our training facility at the TC Beirne Building, 315 Brunswick Street, Fortitude Valley, Brisbane.
