About 'Towards Deep Time'

The UOW Gallery and Art Collection proudly presents Towards Deep Time, an exhibition of two new works by contemporary Australian artists UK Frederick and collaborative duo Sonia Leber and David Chesworth. Frederick’s Unseeded (2022) and Leber and Chesworth’s Where Lakes Once Had Water (2020) are the artists’ response to their collaborations with scientists from the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage (CABAH).

Each of the artists accompanied the scientists on investigative expeditions to remote locations in Australia’s north and north-west. In spectacular yet challenging environments, they experienced the commitment and painstaking processes of scientific endeavour. Frederick’s Unseeded, a series of etched hand-blown glass boab seeds, and Leber and Chesworth’s immersive long-form audio/video work, Where Lakes Once Had Water, bring the lens of an artist to these fieldwork experiences. The artworks offer different insights, introducing a forensic level of creative attention to the research. The artists incorporate local First Nations knowledge of Country and stories into the works, revealing diverse perspectives of time and history, and the critical ways these connect, build and broaden the scientists’ understanding of deep time.

These commissioned artworks are now part of the UOW Art Collection, thereby ensuring they are available for exhibition and tour nationally and internationally.

CABAH’s research aims to tell a culturally inclusive, globally significant history of Australia’s people and environments over the last 130,000 years. With nodes at eight universities across Australia, CABAH seeks to deepen our understanding of Australia’s unique cultural and natural history, informing how we manage biodiversity and cultural heritage today and into the future.

The artwork and the scientific research have been supported by the Australian Government through the Australian Research Council Centres of Excellence scheme. Views expressed are those of the artists and are not necessarily those of the Australian Government or Australian Research Council.
