Event description
Develop and consolidate your skills for conducting complex conversations with those with life-limiting illness.

About this event

Communication is a core clinical skill that is essential to the delivery of safe, high-quality care and can be developed and improved with practise, reflection, lifelong learning, mentorship and support.

This intensive workshop will provide participants with an understanding of evidence-based approaches for tough conversations. Participants will have the opportunity to consider the unique challenges and complex conversations with patients and families raised related to communicating risk, prognosis and planning future care.

Learning Objectives:

During this workshop, participants will:

  • Gain awareness of the evidence-based frameworks and models to support effective clinical consultations
  • Develop skills to observe and deconstruct consultations by analysing patient-clinician interactions
  • Reflect upon experiences of tough conversations with patients, families and carers
  • Develop strategies and practise responses for communication challenges pertinent to communicating risk, discussing prognosis and future care plans
  • Develop the skills to explicitly respond to strong emotions
  • Apply new skills by engaging in experiential learning with simulated patients and contribute to group experiential learning opportunities.

Professor Peter Martin and Ms Meg Chiswell from the Centre for Organised Change in Person-Centred Healthcare (OCPH) will guide participants through small group, interactive learning to develop communication in healthcare fundamentals with a strong focus on communicating risk, prognosis and planning future care.
