Improving Organisational Agility through Project Portfolio Management

Projects exist worldwide in every industry sector, every business area and every level of government. Projects are the fundamental building block of business and industry. Projects are being increasingly used by organisations to implement change, improve organisational agility and achieve business goals and corporate strategy. Project portfolio management practices are being increasingly adopted by organisations to prioritise and select the right projects to meet strategic objectives and improve organisational agility.

Nick will present preliminary findings from his research on project portfolio management and factors that influence organisational performance and contribute to organisational agility. This will be followed by a discussion panel with three experienced senior industry leaders. Trevor Mason, Paul McDonald and Nicola Cowley.

Nick Hadjinicolaou

Nick is the Assistant Professor and Program Director for the Global Project Management Program at Torrens University Australia.

Currently he is conducting research for his PhD in the area of Supporting Project Success through the Implementation of Project Portfolio Management. He has presented at National and International project management conferences in Australia in 2016/2017 and in Poland in 2016. Amongst these include the 2016 AIPM/IPMG Regional conference and the PMI National Conferences in 2016 and 2017.

Prior to joining Torrens University Australia in 2013 he has been a Program, Project and IT Manager for 3Pillars Asia Pacific, Business SA, the State Government of South Australia, IBM and Telstra.

Nick holds a Master of Business Administration and Master of Project Management from the University of Adelaide, is a PMI certified Program and Project Manager and a Certified Management Consultant from the Institute of Management Consultants.

With over 30 years of industry experience in education and senior leadership roles behind him he will present the latest findings on Project Portfolio Management and Organisational Agility.


Trevor Mason

Trevor is the Co-Founder and Director at Gyre Digital Pty Ltd. He believes in making real difference to real lives. Trevor is a visionary entrepreneur, business outcome mentor and change management specialist with over 16 years of outcome focused project delivery experience and deep experience in financial technology sector and services. Trevor has worked in several industry sectors including financial services (banking), large corporate (mining), medium sized corporate (retail), national education, allied health/community services and IT consulting organisations.

Trevor helps organisations develop organisational agility and respond to the challenges of digital disruption.

In 2014 Trevor managed the ME Bank digital transformation program with a team of over 200 people winning ACS Digital Disruptors awards for “Skills Transformation of Work Teams” and “Service Transformation for the Digital Consumer”

Paul MacDonald

Paul is the Asia Pacific Director, Program and Project Services, at SMS Management & Technology. He has 30+ years’ experience in both local and international business. He has a history of leadership roles in industries including Defence, Manufacturing (both electronics and heavy engineering), Construction, Utilities, and Management Consulting.

Paul’s background is in Complex Project and Program Management (including Portfolio, Program and Project Management Office development and operation). However his experience extends to other areas of business including: Operations / Business Management, Business Strategy development and implementation, Risk Analysis, Cost Reduction, Efficiency improvement, Sales and Marketing, and Organisational Change Management.

Paul is a passionate advocate for helping organisations improve their project, portfolio and organisational maturity levels to improve both organisational resilience and agility.

Paul holds a bachelor and master’s degree in engineering from Adelaide University, and an MBA from Stanford University in the USA.

Nicola Cowley

Nicola is a General Manager of Business Improvement for the Experience Australia Group with over twenty years of experience in consulting, project management, human resource management and senior management and leadership roles. She has worked in the public and private sector with a focus on small to medium enterprise and local government.

As a consultant Nicola has been engaged in business and communications planning, information security, research and data analysis, governance, facilitation, shared services, technology and systems implementation projects.

She has experience in IT and HR in organisations in Australia and the United Kingdom where she successfully managed corporate IT communication and training projects for a global engineering firm.

Nicola’s management consulting, enterprise project management and service delivery experience combined with her passion for leading, motivating and mentoring people assists her clients to address human and technology challenges with a focus on utilising technology securely for competitive advantage.

Nicola has been directly involved with organisational change as a result of technology, changes in management, increased competition and implementation of strategy.
