Event description

Description

The TOM: Melbourne Makeathon will return to Swinburne University’s Hawthorn campus in December as part of a global movement that sees teams of technology specialists and enthusiasts join forces to develop creative, low cost solutions for the needs of people living with a disability in just 72 hours.

This year’s Makeathon will take place from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 December, and will be open to families and the public on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December at various times of choice.

Entry is $5 per person and all funds raised directly support the TOM: Melbourne initiative.

The 2017 TOM: Melbourne Makeathon involves 11 “Need Knower” challenges set by Australians living with a disability. Challenges are shared with 11 willing teams of “Makers” consisting of engineers, craftspeople, occupational therapists and programmers. The Makeathon uses innovative assisted technology to create lifelong solutions for problems people with disabilities face.

Solutions created at TOM: Melbourne are available online for anyone to access for free, with the hope that these solutions are of use to other Australians and have the potential to be produced commercially. To date, more than 250 prototypes have been developed through TOM Makeathons globally.
