About the event

In this wide-ranging discussion, we will explore how people of different cultures, faiths and backgrounds can best work together to prevent men’s violence against women, advance gender equality and advocate for change in policies and attitudes that impact negatively on refugee and migrant women.

White Ribbon Australia and Harmony Alliance have a memorandum of understanding that establishes an ongoing consultative relationship regarding the issues and impact of gender-based violence in culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD), migrant, and refugee communities in Australia. Together, we support National Unity Week’s goals of building intercultural solidarity, celebrating the beauty of diversity and working towards an Australia where everyone is able to belong, contribute and thrive.

About our guests:

Jess Hill is a Walkley-award winning investigative journalist and author who’s been reporting exclusively on domestic abuse since 2014. Prior to this, she was a Middle East correspondent, and producer/reporter across ABC TV and radio. In 2019, she published her first book, See What You Made Me Do, about the phenomenon of domestic abuse in Australia. It was awarded the 2020 Stella Prize, and has been shortlisted for several others, including the Walkley Book Award. In 2020, she is adapting her book into a 3-part series for SBS, and is producing a podcast series with the Victorian Women’s Trust.

Nyadol Nyuon is the Chair of Harmony Alliance: Migrant and Refugee Women for Change. She is a lawyer, community advocate, writer, and accomplished public speaker. Nyadol Nyuon is a vocal advocate for human rights, migrant and refugee women, and the settlement of people with refugee experiences and those seeking asylum. She has worked and volunteered extensively in these areas with a range of organisations. Nyadol is also a regular media commentator on these issues, having appeared on ABC’s The Drum, as a panellist on Q&A and contributing to The Age, Sydney Morning Herald and the Saturday Paper, to name just a few.

Brad Chilcott is the Executive Director of White Ribbon Australia, a movement to end gendered violence and advance gender equality. White Ribbon Australia operates under the custodianship of Communicare. He is the founder of Welcoming Australia, a national movement cultivating a culture of welcome for people seeking asylum, refugees and other new arrivals to Australia. Brad is now Chair of the Advisory Panel and a Board Director.
