Description

Join the UQ Art Museum and School of Music as we present the Tinalley in the Robert Smithson: Time Crystals exhibition.

Our UQ Ensemble in Residence, the Tinalley String Quartet, presents a richly varied concert for its second appearance at UQ Art Museum. The program features the music of J.S. Bach, with two excerpts from Bach’s masterwork ‘Art of Fugue’ and a performance by second violinist Lerida Delbridge of the grandiose ‘Chaconne’ for solo violin. Stravinsky’s three pieces were perfectly crafted for a string quartet. The performance concludes with Bela Bartok’s epic first foray into string quartet writing – a journey that produced a further five quartets and arguably the most significant contribution to 20th century chamber music composition.

FREE. Places limited. Please RSVP to avoid disappointment.

Robert Smithson: Time Crystals is the first exhibition in Australia dedicated to the work of American artist Robert Smithson (1938–1973). Best known for his radical land art of the 1960s and early 1970s, Smithson is now widely recognised as one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century. Inspired by ideas of crystalline geometry and non-biological time, he redefined abstraction and challenged art history, declaring that ‘Nature gives way to the incalculable cycles of nonduration’.
