Event description

Description

Tim Wilson was one of the first Liberal Party Member’s to openly support same-sex marriage and a free vote in parliament on it.

After the postal survey closes and before the results are in, the former Human Rights Commissioner will join The Ethics Centre to discuss the next steps.

Tim is in an interesting ethical bind as a spokesperson for the Liberal Party and someone who wants to marry his partner Ryan.

He publicly made a personal address to his fiancé on same-sex marriage in his maiden parliamentary speech last year:

"For seven years a ring has sat on both of our left hands”, he said. “And they are the answer to a question we still cannot ask.”

Tim, a self-identified classical liberal, will discuss what’s involved in changing the Marriage Act if a majority of respondents, however large or small, tick the yes box.

What legislative protections for freedom of religious and cultural expression should there be?

And of course what happens to the political debate if more people tick the no box?

Join Tim at The Ethics Centre on 8 November as he discusses how we can best move forward ethically as a country - whatever the result of the postal survey.
