Description

Let’s talk about the impact gambling has on our clients and the wider community

Hear from people with personal experience of gambling harm

Five years ago Link Health, in partnership with Melbourne writer Arnold Zable, ran a series of storytelling workshops for people struggling with gambling addiction. The end result was a remarkable anthology of first person accounts about the effect of gambling on people’s lives: “From ruin to recovery – gamblers share their stories”.

“Three Sides of the Coin” follows on from this success, bringing together people with personal experience of gambling who have transformed their stories into live performances. These scenes will stimulate role play and explore the often hidden impact of gambling harm on our clients.

We often tend to think that our clients’ financial problems are related to their low income or AOD expense, rather than gambling. Perhaps we don’t think to ask if gambling is part of the picture or we don’t know how to ask. Gambling however often leads to lies, anger, helplessness, family violence, crime, breakdown, debt, eviction, bankruptcy, loneliness and many other issues. Reducing the shame and stigma associated with gambling addiction is something that we as workers can offer our clients.

This dynamic 3-hour workshop combines live theatre with facilitated discussion aimed at encouraging AOD, MH and DV workers and other professionals to have open conversations with clients about the impact gambling has on their lives.

“Three Sides of the Coin” expands on the way we think about gambling and how we can better help address the harms related to this important public health issue.

Presenters: Link Health’s “Three Sides of the Coin” project participants with a lived experience of gambling harm, Artistic Director Catherine Simmonds, and project coordinator, Judy Avisar.
