Event description

Description

Australia is home to more than 500,000 animal and plant species, many of which are found nowhere else in the world. Over the last 200 years, more than 100 animal and plant species have become extinct.

Springfield Lakes Nature Care is hosting a special Threatened Species Day on 7 September to raise awareness of plants and animals at risk of extinction. We invite you to come to our event, which will showcase some of the threatened species, that have been found in our region namely the Powerful Owl, the Tusk Frog, Koala, Greater Glider and more recently the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater. Ipswich Koala Protection Society will bring along a koala. SLNC will host a drey making presentation and a Cane Toad Catching Demonstration. The Frog Society of Qld will give a talk about endangered frogs and the Qld. Mycological Society will be talking about fungi. A special planting of a Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Vine will take place to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the passing of two local environmentalists, the late Lloyd Bird OAM & Ric Nattrass. There will be displays from other wildlife and environmental organisations and craft activities for children. We will conduct a bird walk along Opossum Creek, to visit the revegetation area undertaken by the late Lloyd Bird OAM. Sausage Sizzle will be held to help raise funds for our Landcare group projects.
