Description

About and Information:

Come for a free ranger guided walk along the southern trail from Thompson Beach to Third Creek (3.6km return) to hear how the samphire-covered (native succulent) tidal mudflats, mangrove stands and seagrass beds are used by the migratory birds that arrive here every year.

The walking trail is flat with a hardened surface for about 1km, with stops along the way to look for shorebirds and other points of interest,. The section out to Third Creek is relatively flat, but a little more challenging with the return journey along the beach..

Please note that this event maybe cancelled in the event of poor weather.

The Adelaide International Bird Sanctuary is situated at the southern end of the East Asian-Australasian Flyway (EAAF) and is one of the key sites for migratory birds who use the flyway each year. Thompson Beach provides bird watchers one of the best places in South Australia to view shorebirds going about their daily routine. On any day there can be over 30 species and thousands of birds using the area to roost and feed on the turning tides. The landscape also supports almost 90 species of inland birds.
