Join us for the book launch of this beautiful picture book!

About this event

We are launching This Is My Home a beautiful picture book written and illustrated by South Sudanese Australian children. The launch includes a storytelling session and a book making workshop with local storyteller Agum Maluach. This event is for children of all ages and their families.

Bookings required. It is necessary to book a place for all people over the age of 12 months.

This Is My Home is a book written by children for children - the fourth in a suite of books telling the stories of the South Sudanese families, which began with Donkeys Can’t Fly on Planes in 2013.

As part of this book’s development, young adults who wrote and illustrated Donkeys Can’t Fly on Planes supported their younger brothers and sisters to tell their own stories during lockdown, using book packs sent to their home, and online training provided by Kids’ Own Publishing.

The authors and illustrators of this book are young people aged between 6 – 14 years old from three families living in regional Victoria. They are:

• Michael Maluk, Abut Maluk, Derwei Maluk and Kuei Maluk,

• Ayuen Malual, Keech Malual and Malual Malual, and

• Ayen Biar, Aluong Biar, Thiong Biar and Alek Biar.

Workshops to make the book content were facilitated by local storyteller Agum Maluach, and artist Vonda Keji during Covid 19 lockdowns in 2020, and in person in early 2021.

Agum Maluach’s first eight years were spent as part of a big family in Makuar in Lakes State, South Sudan. Growing up in the remote bush of South Sudan Agum inherited knowledge and stories of Africa and animal behaviours, that she loves to share with children. Agum nows resides in Fitzroy and works as a Visitor Experience Officer at the Werribee Open Range Zoo.

Vonda Keji works with an array of mediums such as paintings, illustrations and photography to explore the complexities of her identity as an African woman living in the West. The book has been designed by Jenna Lee. Jenna Lee is a mixed race Larrakia, Wardaman and Karajarri, Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Filipino) and Anglo Australian woman, award-wining artist, book designer, and a local Yarra resident.
